Old Ponds visit to Spalding for Tractor 2014

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to all our customers at Spalding Tractor 2014. It was great to catch up with you all and share our latest range of books and DVDs.

The unexpected arrival of Farming in Miniature Volume 2 was welcomed - none so than by one of it's authors Peter Wade-Martins.

This new release is a follow on from the first volume, covering 52 manufacturers with supplementary chapters on promotional model tractors, unknown manufacturers and identifies heavy tractors.

Peter, along with two other authors Robert and Adrian, have worked hard to have their work collated and it was great to be able to display the newly released volume 2 book at Tractor 2014.

Our friends Jonathan and Stephen at Tractor Barn Productions launched their two part DVD set The Farming Year, which was well recieved by the old pond customers.

The Farming Year- Through the Seasons uses footage taken over the last five years to show the widest possible variety of tractors and machinery at work out in the fields of Britain.

Part one of the story takes us from manure spreading in January to silage harvesting at the beginning of June.  

The second part of the story takes us from silage making in June to ploughing in December.

Middle East Symposium

Some of you may have attended the Retro Truck Show in Gaydon recently (check out our photos from the event)  This year, running alongside the event was the Middle East Symposium.  Ashley Coghill, organiser of the event, shares his thoughts:

"The Middle East symposium came about after numerous requests from "old drivers" and enthusiasts alike, for me to put on such an event.  It was also a great chance for a driver's "reunion" between many of the old Middle East men, some of whom haven't seen each other for 40 years!  Alongside that, many enthusiasts, some of whom weren't even born when "The Gold Rush" (Middle East overland run) was in full swing, were at the event to soak up the atmosphere and to meet their "hero's"!

"Throughout the day there were slide shows, old cine film footage and talks from the drivers themselves to give a "snap shot" of how the job used to be. Some of the places the trucks delivered to back then are simply not accessible nowadays due to various political problems, and of course the current war!

"Any truck related event would not be complete without an authentic lunch and the symposium was certainly no exception. A typical Middle East trucker's meal was provided which included authentic grilled spicy chicken and rice, followed by tinned fruit cocktail and Carnation Milk which incidentally, was left on each table to be poured straight from the can, just like it was back in the day!

"300 delegates filled the conference room and judging by the "buzz" at the end of the day, each and every one of them thoroughly enjoyed themselves!"

Old Pond at the Retro Truck Show

Last week Old Pond were pleased to be able to take part in this year's Retro Truck Show in Gaydon.  It was a great event & our team were pleased to meet up with so many of you there.

We were joined on the Sunday by renowned truck author Patrick Dyer who, as well as showing his own truck, was on hand to sign copies of his popular books for visitors.

Here are some photos taken during the event, including a great picture of Patrick in his 1983 Volvo F12 restored in the period (late 1970s) livery of Edwin Shirley Trucking a company that specialises in concert tour and conference work.

 
      

Invigorating crowds at Gaydon Truck Show

A fabulous time was had by all at this year's Gaydon Truck Show, the first time at the show for 5m since the acquisition of Old Pond.  The atmosphere in the model truck hall was invigorating with visitors from as far as the Czech Republic to France displaying their impressive creations.

Pickles and Tim were thrilled to welcome renowned author Patrick Dyer to the stand .... resulting in good sales of his new Scania title.  But don't worry, there's still plenty of stock at the Old Pond HQ so get your orders in now! Mark Robinson was never far away showing friends and associates of his appearance in Patricks book Scania 112 & 142 at Work.

A true surprise, however, was Roger Smith's appearance on Sunday.  Looking relaxed and happy in his retirement, Roger purchased the new Scania book before rushing off to find Patrick to sign it!

Old Pond at Gaydon, 14th & 15th June

This coming weekend Old Pond Publishing will be exhibiting at the 7^th Classic & Vintage Commercial Show at Gaydon, Warwickshire.  This colourful two day event features a diverse selection of classic and vintage commercial vehicles from per 1985 and visitors will be able to seen a varying range. 

Old Pond will have a stall throughout the event, so why not come along to meet some of the team there and to buy some new books or dvds.  You could even stock up on that last minute Father’s Day gift!  And if you need an additional incentive, Patrick Dyer will also be signing copies of his new brand new book “Scania 112 & 142 at Work” on the Old Pond stand at 11.00am and 1.00pm.  So why not come along & join us, we’d love to see you there!

Appleby Horse Fair

The countdown to the Appleby Horse Fair 2014 has begun with preparations for the biggest travellers gathering in the world swinging into place.  Those going to Appleby with bow tops and travelling wagons are now on the road and some will travel hundreds of miles to reach Appleby by the beginning of June. If you are in the vicinity take special care on the roads; horse-drawn vehicles are slow moving.

Melmerby village is one of the stopping off places for bow tops and horses en-route to the Fair but if you can’t make it yourself you can catch all the action and atmosphere within the pages of two very special books on Appleby Fair by Old Pond author Heidi M.
