Stuart Gibbard's latest book is now in stock. British Tractors 1945-1965 (published by Herridge) draws on Stuart's enormous collection of original tractor literature to illustrate an A-Z of tractors made in Britain from the end of the war until the mid-1960s. He supports the illustrations with brief accounts of the companies and models. The book is now available from Old Pond at £35.00

More news for fans of Stuart's books: he has completed researching and  writing his long-awaited David Brown Tractor Story Part Two. It is now being prepared by Old Pond for publication in March.

Tracks, Tyres and Skid Units: the story of Ford tractor conversions part one - evolution 1917 to 1964 is the latest DVD from Tractor Barn, now in stock at Old Pond at £16.95.With a running time of approximately 90 minutes, the programme goes chronologically through conversions alongside the actual Ford models upon which they were based. Film-makers Stephen Richmond and Jonathan Whitlam have combined footage from working events with 'some facinating archive film'.

There are some ingenious and spectacular-looking machines in Chris Lockwood's new DVD, Sprayers and Spreaders: self-propelled machines in Britain. Chris doesn't do things by halves. Over the last couple of years he has filmed no less than 51 different examples of these workhorses in operation, most of them on farms.

Know Your Cats book by Jack Byard is now in stock

In 2008 Bradford pensioner Jack Byard came up with the idea for a little handbook on sheep breeds. He wanted to prove to children that there were more than two types of sheep: the white ones and the black ones.

Know Your Sheep was an instant success, not just with children but with walkers and novice enthusiasts of all ages. More than that, it has spawned a growing list of titles - eighteen to date - all pocket-sized with 40-45 clear pictures and concise text. Eleven of the Know Your books are by Jack himself, these are all animals based from ducks to donkeys. The other seven are by specialist machinery authors from trains to tractors.

Today sees the publication of Jack's latest: Know Your Cats, with photographs sourced from a wide range of breeders. Among them is Damian Weed of the Just Cats Veterinary Hospital, Stamford, Connecticut whose Scottish Fold 'Taco' is one of the stars of the book. Taco is even going to hold a pawtograph signing - when we get details we will put them up.

Yes, Old Pond's annual catalogue - our sixteenth - is now available and being mailed out to our customers.

You'll notice a change this year because for the first time we have increased the format to just under A4. With more books and DVDs dispayed on each page you should find it far easier working your way around the contents.

Altogether you can choose from over three hundred books and DVDs, all of them aimed at people with working boots, enthusiasts for the land-based industries from animal breeds and tractors to trucking and earthmoving.

We have already been asked where you can buy the tractor on the cover. This Crescent model Agricultural Tractor is part of their run from 1949 to 1961. We don't have any for sale. We just think it is a beautiful image from Farming in Miniature Volume 1, the subject of the previous post.

At a price of £49.95 a book has to be very good indeed to justify the cost. We think that the new Farming in Miniature Part 1 won't let you down if you have a serious interest in farm models. A unique trucking gathering and drive-past to celebrate Martin Phippard's 70th birthday

There was a very special occasion on Saturday to mark the 70th birthday of Martin Phippard.

Some 88 trucks gathered at the BP Services on the Warminster by-pass, Somerset.

Many of the trucks and drivers represented Martin's customers. Others came to show their respect for a great trucking enthusiast and journalist, the co-producer of the CP Productions series of trucking DVDs filmed all over the world.

The police closed the by-pass for a few minutes so that the trucks could parade in the Salisbury direction past Martin who observed the procession and the air-blasted greetings from a strategic layby.

Heavily involved in the organisation was Martin's co-producer, Pete Connock (second from the right in the first photograph). All Martin's family were there too.

It was a wonderful occasion, fit for a king of trucking, to which the following photographs are unable to do more than scant justice.
